A Pipeline Should Tell You What Happens Next

Most sales pipelines contain plenty of activity and not enough operational truth. The goal is a pipeline where every active opportunity has a meaningful stage, an accountable owner, a dated next action, an aging rule, a readiness signal, and a clean handoff when the work is won.

What I look at

The Operating Surface

  • Lead intake and routing
  • Stage exit criteria
  • Next-action discipline
  • Proposal aging
  • Forecast vs readiness
  • CRM adoption
  • Sales-to-delivery handoff
  • Pipeline exception reporting
What usually shows up

Common Findings

  • “Active” deals with no future action
  • Managers maintaining parallel spreadsheets
  • Stages used as labels instead of decisions
  • Follow-up activities logged after the fact
  • Closed Won records that are not operationally ready
  • Forecast meetings spent arguing about data quality
How the work starts

We follow one real item all the way through the workflow.

We trace one real lead, job, request, placement, work order, or report from start to finish. We mark the systems touched, decisions made, ownership changes, waiting, duplicate entry, customer and internal updates, and the workarounds people use when the normal process does not fit reality. Then the fix is ranked by impact and effort — sometimes a new workflow rule, sometimes a checklist or readiness gate, sometimes CRM cleanup, dashboarding, automation, or AI. Technology comes after the operating problem is clear.
